Sustainable Tourism

The World Tourism Organization (www. wto.org) defines “sustainable tourism” as tourism that meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the future of the tourist sector. The principles and the common guidelines for conducting sustainable tourism can be applied in all destinations regardless of the size of the business sector or the numbers of the current tourists. Just like the triple bottom line of Sustainable Development, the principles of sustainable tourism are based on environmental, economic and socio-cultural aspects of development. There should be a well balanced structure and connections between all three dimensions. Almost 20 years ago,  Hunter and Green (1995) came up with a great list of guiding points for achieving sustainable tourism. We support them all:

Follow ethical principles that respect the culture and environment of the area, the economy and the traditional way of life of the local population, and the political patterns.

Involve the local population, proceed only with their approval, and provide for a degree of local control.

Keep intra-generational equity in mind, including fair distribution of benefits and costs.

Plan and manage tourism with regard for the protection of natural environment for future generations.

Plan in a manner integrated with other economic sectors.

Continuously assess to evaluate impacts and initiate action to counter any negative effects

MSH and all of our employees believe that a long term success of the life as we know it, especially if we are referring to any island in the Pacific Ocean, greatly depends on how every sector of the society treats our only home, planet Earth. We have one home and if we do not take care of it, it will not take care of us in the future. We give, not in order to invest and take more back, but in order to have left enough for our grandchildren so that they can also enjoy clean water and breathable air, diverse animal kingdom and healthy food growing out of a clean soil. We protect the environment, our immediate eco-system and our ohana here on Oahu because we believe that this is not only the right way to go but the ONLY way left for us.

                        sustainable planet

MSH is dedicated to preserve Nature, celebrate the Hawaiian wild life diversity and always support sustainable operations during all of our daily activities. We are proud to expand our operations while at the same time shrink the ecological footprint we leave behind. We believe that the real foundation of any long term success lays upon a genuine sustainable development within a company. In the business of tourism, especially at a remote destination as Hawaii, the resilience of the local eco systems and the high degree of involvement in sustainable practices of all stakeholders is detrimental. This is why our direction is headed towards a zero-waste policy, servicing all possible products that we offer and promoting of sustainable development of the Oahu tourist industry.
